Handpicked, small batch fermented, and barrel aged in French oak, the Gold River Pinot Noir offers exceptional quality and regionality at a good price. A year with a cold beginning, 2017 had a very fine, settled ending. A cool spring and windy early summer resulted in an uneven flowering and set. However, from February, very pleasant conditions ensued. The fruit was harvested 2-3 weeks later than normal, with 10-15% lower crop levels in excellent condition. A mix of vineyards from three subregions. Bendigo provided fullness, structure and weight, Pisa mid palate sweetness and Gibbston fragrance. Fruit from 3 vineyards was divided into 9 different open top fermenters. Most of these had fully destemmed fruit, with a maximum 20% whole cluster used in one fermenter. Typical maceration was 21-24 days before pressing. The wines went through MLF in barrel and spent 8 months in French oak.
