Originating from the Rhone Valley in France, Viognier (pronounced Vee-on-yay) is relatively new to New Zealand with 75% of the vines grown in the Hawkes Bay and Gisborne wine regions. Viognier is an aromatic grape variety and is a remarkably difficult grape to grow. Viognier grapes have naturally low acidity and require a great deal of sunshine to ripen properly.
Viognier is known for producing textural white wines with strong stone-fruit flavours of peaches, pears and apricots. Its scented floral aromas of lavender and pollen make it a great food match with Asian pork and chicken cuisines.
Viognier has the most amazing clear, golden colouring and are intended to be consumed at a younger age.
