Stratford Wines is new to Martinborough. It is owned and named after wine maker Strat Canning. Stratford Wine's 4 hectare vineyard, situated on the free draining Martinborough Terrace was planted in 1993 in Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Riesling. There has already been some rationalisation with Pinot being increased at the expense of Chardonnay, Stratford Wines was awarded the Trophy for the Champion Pinot Noir at the 2000 Liquorland Top 100 for its 1999 wine and the Champion Pinot Noir at the 2001 Royal Easter Show for its 2000 Pinot Noir. While rarely seen, Stratford's Pinot Noir and Riesling wines are of a high quality and well worth searching out. Michael Cooper in his Buyer's guide to New Zealand Wines described Stratford's Pinot Noir as 'a lush, full-coloured wine with lovely depth of sweet, ripe fruit characters, cherryish and spicy...a deliciously rich red'. Stratford Wines are available direct from the winery, by internet and from select wine outlets and restaurants throughout the country. Stratford Wines are exported to Australia, Singapore and the USA.
